Kumar Mangalam Birla is a famous Indian industrialist and President of the famous Aditya Birla Group. Aditya Birla Group is one of India's largest industrial houses. Grasim, Hindalco, Ultratech Cement, Aditya Birla Nuvo, Idea Cellular, Aditya Birla Retail, Aditya Birla Minics etc. are the companies coming under Birla Group. He is the Chancellor of Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS Pilani - who was established by Ghanshyam Das Birla). In addition to its group companies, Kumar Mangalam Birla has held several important and responsible positions on various regulatory and business boards.
Kumar Mangalam Birla was born on 14 June 1967 in the famous Birla family in Mumbai. He is a member of the fourth generation Birla family. His childhood passed to Kolkata and Mumbai. He graduated from Bombay University with Commerce. After this he passed the Chartered Accountancy examination from the Indian Chartered Accountant Institute (Institute of Chartered Account of India) and became a chartered accountant. He also obtained an MBA degree from the London Business School (which is also an honorary member). They are married to Neerja Kasliwal and there are three children of Birla couple - Ananya Shree, Aryaman Vikram and Advaithesha.
After the death of his father Aditya Birla in 1995, Kumar Mangalam Birla was made the Chairman of the Group. At that time, his age was only 28 years, and people questioned their ability to run such a big Birla empire, but they did not only extend the Aditya Birla group with their skills, passion, hard work and thinking but also expanded the company in new areas. When he took over the command of Aditya Birla in 1995, the turnover of the group was 2 billion US dollars, which increased to 40 billion US dollars under his leadership. The group provides employment to about 130000 people and nearly 60 percent of the total share of its earnings comes from overseas.
Apart from Aditya Birla Group companies, Kumar Mangalam Birla has been holding several important and responsible positions on various regulatory and business boards from time to time. He was the Chairman of the Consultative Committee formed by the Ministry of Company Affairs in 2006 and 2007. He was also a member of the Advisory Committee of Trade and Industry formed by the Prime Minister. Apart from this he was also a member of the Board of Trade Boards formed by the Minister of Industry and Commerce and the Central Board of Directors of the Reserve Bank of India.
